How to Convert Landscape Video to Vertical Without Cutting Off Faces

Almost every video worth clipping was shot landscape: podcasts, webinars, interviews, streams, talks. Short-form is vertical. Bridging that gap badly is the most common reason a good moment turns into an unwatchable clip.

Why a plain center-crop fails

A 16:9 frame is much wider than a 9:16 one. Crop straight down the middle and you throw away most of the width, which is fine until the speaker sits off-center, a second person joins, or the important thing is a product on the table. Then your vertical clip is a shot of an empty background while the action happens just out of frame.

The three ways to reframe

• ▸Smart crop: follow the subject so the speaker, face, or product stays centered even as they move. Best for talking-head content.
• ▸Blur pad: keep the whole frame and fill the top and bottom with a blurred version of the video. Best when the full width matters, like a screen share or a wide shot.
• ▸Keep original: some platforms and some content simply read better in their native aspect. Not everything needs to be 9:16.

Match the aspect to the platform

TikTok, Reels, and Shorts are vertical at 9:16. Instagram feed likes 4:5. A square 1:1 travels well across everything. YouTube's main feed is still 16:9. The point is to export the aspect each destination actually wants, instead of forcing one crop everywhere.
